Castle
Hedingham developed around
the Castle, probably now
the best preserved Norman
keep in the country and
the ancient seat of the
de Veres, Earls of Oxford.
They were given the land
by William the Conqueror,
and in the thirteenth
century they founded a
hospital dedicated to
St James at the castle
gates.
The
village was famous for
St James well, probably
located on the Eastern
edge of the village, a
freshwater spring celebrated
for its miraculous cure
of disease.
These
days we have no hospital,
and the well is long since
lost - but we do have
an excellent team in our
small surgery in the centre
of the village. We look
